The “best” camera for any photography is one that you are totally competent with. You must know every setting and feature and when, why and how to use them. You must know which flash unit is 100% compatible with your camera and how to use the TTL function to maximize your flash pictures.
The Nikon D3 or D700 or the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III or 5D are full-frame (24mm X 36mm) sensor cameras and would be your best choice.

a minimum of two DSLR bodies, all current models are really very good and a selection of lenses from wide angle (group shots ) to telephoto zooms for cose up portrait work (70-200mm in 35mm terms ).
The Nikon D3 and Pentax K20D are amongst the best for noise versus quality for available light shots, important to retaining atmosphere in churches etc
If you are aiming for the higher end of the market the medium format such as a Hasselblad or Phase One are the cameras to go for
