Do you think an hour and a half of inhaling darkroom chemicals (dextol, HC110, stop, fix) could do you harm?

?Habeas Corpus? asked:

Every day I spend an hour and a half in the darkroom, and when I leave, I and the other people who were in it with me, feel terrible and sluggish for the rest of the day. Do you think the chemicals have anything to do with it? :D Thanks!

Isn’t the old saying that to much of anything is bad for u? I remember my darkroom experiences and i didn’t ever feel terrible,i did dislike the smell though, maybe just cut ur time down a bit? get fresh air in between photos?

Sounds like you need to talk to your instructor. It is very obvious that there is no ventilation in your school’s darkroom or it has shut off (due to a storm or short circuit).

Those chemicals can make you sick if you keep breathing them in for extended periods of time. Every darkroom should be ventilated, no matter how large or small.

If you get no satisfaction with resolving this, you should refuse to go in the darkroom.

I don’t think the chemicals are making you sluggish. But the room should be well ventilated. I used to work in a dark room and spent a couple of hours everyday in there with the chemicals. I’m sure it wasn’t healthy, but I lived.

I used to spend hours in the darkroom at my first college and the only real issue was adjusting back to light when I left. I agree with tipscomm it might be something with the ventilation because a 1/2 hour shouldn’t cause that much widespread effects on you & your classmates.
