No it is not more difficult, any professional camera shop has all the chemicals, paper and supplies you’ll need.
You’ll also be able to order them online, but use a reputable retailer that has a track record of handling the materials properly (like storing the paper and film for long term in refridgerators)
Hope this helps.

Not at all. I’m lucky enough to live in a city with a reputable camera store. Been in business for over 80 years.
Anyway, I still shoot film, and have not had a shortage of supplies. Though, I do not print my film myself due to the price. Sure, if I had money for a good condenser enlarger, and the room, I’d buy it. Until then, I only develop my film.
The hardest thing to find would be the enlargers. Not many people, if any, still make them. A good lens is also needed.

The darkroom is a thing of the past and yes the materials to make a darkroom work are next to impossible to get.
When one consders the dangers with the chemicals, the disposal of the chemicals, the time involved, the hit and miss of the situation, it is not hard to see why the darkroom has disappeared since the appearance of digital on the scene.
I used to have a darkroom but got rid of it gladly when digital SLR cameras reached 6.1 megapixels. It was getting to the point I could taste the chemicals in my mouth, and that’s not good.
Now, with digital and with cameras exceeding 18 megapixels a darkroom is no longer necessary because film is now obsolete.

There are still a fair number of people who have their own darkroom, a majority of which are doing black and white photography. Within the realm of fine art black and white photography, silver prints still reign supreme in terms of quality and proven archivalness. Now in terms of the difficulty of finding your chemistry, I have had no major problems. In terms of it being convenient, well you arent going to find a bottle of pyro at your local shopping mall, but if you live in a major metropolitain area, or you have access to the internet, finding what you need isnt so difficult.

Check your local craigslist. I see whole entire setups for $200-$500. I have never done darkroom work (and dont know if these are really “everything that you could concievably need” or not but that’s whats stated in most the ads I read) but I see this stuff advertised all the time in my area. It seems to come in waves, only one or two listings for a week or two and then a couple dozen.
