How much pure water must be mixed with 9 pints of 70% developer to produce the mixture he needs?

darkroom
Lola18 asked:

Nick DiGregorio is developing film in his darkroom when he realizes he does not have the proper developer. He needs a mixture that is 20% developer, but he only has a mixture that is 70% developer. How much pure water must be mixed with 9 pints of 70% developer to produce the mixture he needs? Round your answer to the nearest hundredth when necessary.

the standard diluton equation applies here.

C1V1 = C2V2

C1 is 70%, V1 is 9 pints, C2 is 20%

The total final volume, V2 = C1V1/C2

The total amount of water to be added is V2 - V1
