What accessories are needed for a darkroom enlarger?
Perhaps sometime in the future I’d like to have my own darkroom, but I don’t know what all is needed for an enlarger (negative carrier, light source, etc.) Soo, what all is needed?
[Also, I realize it depends on what comes with the enlarger, but the more thorough the answer, the better.
]
And, if you felt like suggesting an actual enlarger, that would be great too.

There are the basics, but everyone knows you need an enlarger, lens and neg carrier, enlarging timer and some kind of easel on the dry side and of course a good OC safe light
The wet side is of course seven trays, developer, stop bath, first fix, second fix, holding tray, hypo-eliminator and second holding tray as well as a darkroom timer
Outside the darkroom you will need all the things like film developing tanks, film and paper washing tanks and systems, graduates, timers, drying racks, cutter, mounting area.
And then there are the tons of little things you will need along the way like hypo check, Orbit bath, all your different developers, thermometers, towels, multi-grade filters, grain focuser, dodging and burning scraps, light table, 8x loupe (can be the same one you use when you focus your 4×5 view camera)
Perhaps most of all, you will need some kind of chemical container for the used developer you can recycle during your cities hazmat recycle weekends. All fixer needs to go through silver recovery before it can be recycled too.
You may find that taking a class at your local community college and working in their darkroom for a semester will give you all the information you need so you don’t be in the middle of your first printing project at home and find you are missing some critical component.
Add another book to the one 4×5″ mentioned, Darkroom Magic … you will have to look on Amazon for it, since it is out of print.
Both Beseler and Omega make excellent enlargers … if you are only printing 35 mm, look for a good Beseler 23C and Nikon 50 mm lens. If you are going to be printing up to 4×5 inch negs, the Omega “D” or “B” series 4×5 enlarger with appropriate lenses (50 mm for 35 mm film, 80 mm for 120 film and 135 mm for 4×5 film)
